Ophthalmology is the medical specialty which deals with the health of the eyes and visual system including those parts of the brain concerned with vision.
I trained in ophthalmology in the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology at Glasgow University, Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. My training was broadly based, and included all the major divisions within ophthalmology, such as anterior segment, glaucoma, uveitis, medical and surgical retina, neuro-ophthalmology and paediatrics.
As well as general ophthalmology, I trained in the subspecialty of oculo-plastic and lacrimal surgery. This is the application of the techniques of plastic surgery to the treatment of disorders of the eyelids and tear drainage system. These include ptosis, ectropion, entropion, watering eyes, thyroid eye disease and orbital fractures.
I have worked overseas in Brunei and have had clinical attachments in centres of excellence in Los Angeles and New Orleans, Melbourne and Vancouver.
I am registered as a specialist in ophthalmology by the General Medical Council, am a consultant adviser in ophthalmology to the Civil Aviation Authority, and am an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
I have published 20 papers in ophthalmology and several book chapters in three specialist textbooks. I operate privately at the BUPA Hartswood Hospital, and I am registered with all major insurance companies.
General interests
I enjoy meeting people from other cultures and have travelled widely in North America, the Caribbean, South-East Asia and Australia. My main sporting interests are aviation, scuba diving and sailing. I was trained as a pilot by the Royal Air Force (University Air Squadron), which stimulated a lifelong interest in aviation. I obtained my private pilot's licence in 1985. I love diving and marine biology and have obtained the PADI open water diver, advanced diver, rescue diver and Nitrox certificates.
